5.1.2. The possibility ( objectiveness - subjective meaning) As the possibility, the confidence of "should" is weaker than that of "must." This relationship is the same as the obligation which was explained in the previous subsection. (3) a. According to the map, this should be our way. (This will probably be right.) b. She should get to the office at nine, but she didn't turn up. (It is necessary that she do it.) (3a) means the speaker finds the way on the map, but does not have confidence. When "ought to" and "should" are compared, the meanings are similar, but the meaning of "ought to" is more strong. Usually "should" is used. |
