5.2.4. Temporary 2 (Stative) "Only the action verbs are used with the progressive form." is the the generic present. For example, see below. (14) a. He is saying bad things about others. b. I only know him by sight. (14a) expresses the durative act with the progressive form. (14b) also expresses the duration without it. This uses the stative verb and it is not usually used as "knowing." Sometimes the stative verbs and the progressive form are used. (15) I live in Hakodate. The above is the present tense and the verb is the stative verb. When the progressive form is put, it is as follows. (16) I am living in Hakodate. The above is acceptable. It means living in Hakodate as well as that of (15). We can recall that the progressive form has the temporality as the meaning. (15) means the state living in the present and also in the future, but (16) means living temporarily and moving somewhere in the near future. See another example. (17) You're just hearing things. In the above, the verb is the stative verb and means the temporality. That is, it means it must be your imagination. |
