やさしい英会話の表現

～大学で～

　－As a man is walking along the street, a cat is walking at his feet, too.－

　As we were walking for a while, the main gate of the university came into sight.
Rickey was going to an international center where students studying abroad gather before he went to his office.
I was walking in the opposite direction.
I know his purpose but leave him to do so.

　As I was walking for a while after leaving Rickey, a pond came into my sight.
The pond of about 100 meters in girth in the university is a man-made one I heard.
There were several benches around the pond, nevertheless nobody appeared.
It depends on a period of time how many people are.
Benches are usually being filled with students at lunch time.

　Would it come here at this time?
I looked around with a tense atmosphere to see if it was.

　A tense moment, I held my breath.

　I have seen it only three times.
I have not begun to talk yet.
Of course I don't know who it is.

少し緊張しながら周囲を見回してみた。

　見るのは今日でまだ３回目。
話したこともまだない。
当然誰かもまだわからない。

人の多さは時間帯によるのだ。

　It depends on ～ で、「それは～次第だ」という意味になります。

What are you going to do tomorrow?
（明日は何をするつもりですか）
It depends on the weather.
（それは天気次第ですね）
If it is fine tomorrow, I'm going for a drive.
（もしも明日晴れたら、ドライブに行くつもりです）

（参考）
　depend onには「～に頼る」という意味もあります。

The children depend on her.
（子供たちは彼女を頼りにしています。）
You are only one to depend on.
（頼れるのはあなたしかいない）

＜今日のメモ＞

　pond は「池」という意味で lake「湖」よりも小さいものを意味します。
　pool にも「池」という意味がありますが、pond よりも小さい意味があります。
　道路にできた水たまりは、a pool of water といいます。
もちろん、水泳用のプールの意味もあります。
